The company was established in 2006 to commercialise the so-called Flow Through Capacitor (FTC). The FTC is a patent-protected innovative water purification technology that effectively removes ions such as salt, calcium, chlorine, nitrate and arsenic from water. Initial funding was provided by Unilever Ventures who remain the major shareholder.
FTC can be used in water purification, water softening and water desalination applications. Key features of the FTC technology are: 1. High ion removal percentage of over 95%; 2. Very good water efficiency of more than 90% (very little waste water); 3. Nil chemical use; 4. Low energy requirements; 5. Good scalability when compared to incumbent technologies; 6. A long economic life.
These benefits translate directly into financial savings in terms of total cost of ownership. Desalinated water produced with FTC will cost about 40% less than produced by RO by 2010 and is far more environmentally efficient compared with existing technologies. The head office is in Vlaardingen, The Netherlands but will move to Leiden, The Netherlands in April of 2009.
STRATEGY The company is ready to leverage 6 years, €11.6m, of technical development to commercialise FTC, initially in three market sectors: Industrial (€2.0b market size), domestic appliances (€3.2b) and residential water treatment (€1.4b). It has secured €1.6m in future development grants and is planning an external funding round of €4m in Q2 2009. Through the acquisition of Biosource Inc. (the original IP owner of FTC) in May 2008, the company has a strong global IP position (37 Patents) and is also in the process of filing further patents which will effectively prevent competitors entering the market with cost effective FTC cells. FTC has an enormous potential. The company is at the cutting-edge of the rapidly changing water sector, a sector widely believed to be one of the global economic issues of the next generation. The company is aiming at top line revenue of €75m a year in 2013 and will be cash flow positive mid 2011.
